The Ukrainian Air Force has officially commenced the use of the AIM-9X Block II air-to-air missiles, marking a significant enhancement to its aerial capabilities. Footage showcasing these advanced missiles has been released by the Air Command “Center,” providing the first official images of the AIM-9X Block II in service with Ukrainian armed forces.

The AIM-9X Block II is recognized as the most advanced missile in the short-range air-to-air category. Designed for compatibility with a wide array of modern aircraft, these missiles can be deployed on platforms such as the F-15C Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18 Super Hornet, E/A-18G Growler, F-22 Raptor, and all variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The integration of the AIM-9X Block II into the Ukrainian Air Force’s arsenal is expected to significantly bolster the operational capabilities of its pilots, particularly those flying the F-16. Additionally, these missiles can be utilized by the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) for intercepting cruise missiles and other airborne threats.

In May, it was confirmed that the Ukrainian military received the latest version of the NASAMS 3 systems, which are now equipped to deploy the new AIM-9X missiles. The AIM-9X Block II features an upgraded warhead and a digital safety fuze to ensure secure flight operations.

One of the key enhancements of the Block II version is the ATK MK-139 engine, which boasts thrust vector control capabilities, significantly improving missile maneuverability. The design incorporates fixed foreplanes and smaller fins, optimizing flight performance. While the speed and range of the new missile remain classified, its advanced features position it as a formidable asset for the Ukrainian Air Force.
