NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that Ukraine’s path to the Alliance is irreversible but there was never a promise that membership would be part of the peace agreement.

He made this statement on April 4 during a press conference following the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, as reported by Babel's correspondent.

“We decided in Washington [during the July 2024 NATO summit] that Ukraine’s path to NATO is irreversible. We are building a bridge through everything we do with Ukraine to ensure it is as compatible with NATO as possible,” he emphasized.

At the same time, Rutte pointed out that Ukraine was never promised that NATO membership would be part of any peace settlement.

“But Ukraine was never promised that NATO membership would be part of any peace agreement. I mean, that’s also true,” said Mark Rutte.

Earlier, ahead of the North Atlantic Council meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia would remain a long-term threat to NATO countries—even if a peace agreement is reached with Ukraine. This was reported by European Pravda on April 3.
