US President Donald Trump stated that the United States wants Russia’s war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible and that both Ukrainian and Russian leaders are “ready to make a deal.”
He made these comments to reporters aboard a plane en route from Washington to Miami on April 4. Trump also mentioned that he had spoken with President Zelenskyy “not too long ago.”
“I think he [Zelenskyy] is ready to make a deal. […] I think that President Putin is ready to make a deal. Then it will stop the killings of thousands of young people a week,” Trump said.
When asked about negotiations with Putin’s representative, Kirill Dmitriev, Trump responded that he does not discuss specific individuals.
“I just will tell you that there is a lot of good conversation going on about Ukraine and Russia,” the US president answered.

On April 1, Jacqui Heinrich, Senior White House Correspondent for Fox News, reported that Trump believes Putin is deliberately delaying comprehensive ceasefire negotiations. Frustrated by what he perceives as Russia’s slow approach to diplomacy, Trump’s comments highlight his growing impatience.
This frustration was echoed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on April 4, who suggested that Trump wouldn’t fall into the “trap of endless negotiations,” adding that it would soon be clear whether Russia is genuinely serious about peace.
US General Christopher Cavoli, commander of US European Command, said on April 3 that any potential agreement would not mark the end of Russia’s territorial ambitions.
Meanwhile, amid these diplomatic tensions, a Ukrainian delegation is set to travel to the United States later this week or early next week to discuss a critical minerals agreement.
This all follows several rounds of talks in Saudi Arabia in March, during which the US, Ukraine, and Russia worked on achieving a potential ceasefire.
