Ukrainian Border Guard Dogs Are Now Equipped With NATO-Standard Gear
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGSU) showcased its service dogs' new equipment, meeting NATO standards, as part of ongoing reforms and modernization efforts.
A video shared by the SBGSU highlighted one of its service dogs, Zhigan, confidently walking in newly issued protective boots. While the boots may still need some breaking in, they are specifically designed to protect the dogs' paws from sharp objects and landmines during operational tasks. Along with the boots, the dogs are also equipped with protective goggles to shield their eyes from dust and debris.
This specialized gear is part of international support from a NATO member state, aimed at enhancing the safety and effectiveness of SBGSU’s canine units in the field. The SBGSU continues to align its practices with NATO and EU standards, ensuring the safety and modernization of Ukraine’s border security efforts.
In addition to this, earlier reports from June 2024 noted that the European Union provided the Armed Forces of Ukraine with 12 mine-detection dogs. These specially trained dogs assist in demining operations across Ukraine, proving effective even when advanced technical equipment is available. Their keen sense of smell allows them to detect explosive materials in small quantities, making them vital in clearing dangerous areas.
The equipment provided by international partners, including boots, goggles, vests, and other specialized items, plays a crucial role in supporting these canine teams as they contribute to Ukraine’s demining efforts.
