Ukrainian border guard units are conducting mopping-up operations in settlements along the Russia-Ukraine border in the Kharkiv region after renewed Russian attempts to push deeper into Ukrainian territory, according to Ukrainska Pravda on January 29.

Colonel Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, said the situation was most tense near the settlements of Dihtiarnе, Nesterne and Kruhle, where Russia has been trying to expand the fighting zone using small infantry groups rather than armored vehicles.

“These attempts involve small infantry groups … our units are not only repelling attacks but also mopping up the area and taking captives,” Demchenko said.

Demchenko added that Russian activity has been observed near Vovchanski Khutory, where State Border Guard Service units are deployed on defensive lines.

Other Ukrainian outlets, also citing Demchenko, reported similar cross-border infiltration attempts and fighting in other parts of the Kharkiv region and in adjacent areas of the Sumy region.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian Shahed‑type drones struck a civilian train in the Kharkiv region, killing and injuring passengers, underscoring continued hostilities affecting the region’s transport infrastructure.
