Russian drones struck a civilian passenger train travelling the Barvinkove–Lviv–Chop route in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Tuesday, injuring two people and setting rail cars on fire, according to Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba on January 27.

Kuleba said the train was hit by three Shahed-type drones, with impacts recorded in front of the locomotive and in a passenger car that caught fire.

Head of Kharkiv regional administration Oleh Syniehubov said the strike occurred in the Barvinkove community and that emergency services were working at the site, with buses dispatched to transport passengers and to assist people waiting at stations for the return service.

The strike on the Barvinkove–Lviv–Chop passenger service follows a pattern of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s rail network since the start of the full-scale war in February 2022, including the April 8, 2022 missile attack on Kramatorsk station that Ukrainian officials said killed dozens of civilians.

It also followed the strike on the Chaplyne rail hub in Dnipropetrovsk region that Ukrainian authorities said killed 25 people and set passenger cars on fire, while Russia said it had hit a military train.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia has been deliberately targeting Ukraine’s railway infrastructure with Shahed drones, striking substations, locomotive depots, and passenger terminals across several regions and causing widespread train delays.
