By the morning of August 28, Ukraine’s national rail company, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported delays across the network. The reason, all too familiar to Ukrainians: Russian strikes.

During the single night, Russia launched 629 aerial weapons against Ukraine, including more than 500 Shahed drones, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. As of publication, Kyiv alone reported about 50 people wounded and 18 killed, including children.

Two key railway facilities were hit during the night assault — one in the Vinnytsia region and another in Kyiv. In the Vinnytsia region, a railway hub in the city of Koziatyn was damaged, causing delays for trains using the route. Trains had to be diverted around the destroyed section, requiring several hours of work by repair crews.

In Kyiv, a high-speed Intercity+ passenger train was destroyed. A Shahed drone struck one of the railcars directly—not debris, but a targeted hit. The impact set the electric train ablaze, leaving it beyond repair. At least one additional railcar was damaged.

The losses amount to several million dollars.

The precision of the strike indicates Russia deliberately targeted this Ukrzaliznytsia facility. Notably, the site is a depot where passenger trains are based and prepared for service. In other words, civilian infrastructure was directly destroyed.

For Ukraine, the railway is the primary means of rapid travel within the country and abroad, aside from road transport. With air travel suspended due to the war, rail remains the only option for many to reach other countries. At the start of the full-scale invasion, it was the backbone of evacuation efforts for millions of Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression.

Russian strikes on the civilian railway are highly symbolic. While Russia insists it is hitting military targets, in reality, it is deliberately destroying infrastructure essential to Ukrainian civilian life—even while signaling supposed readiness for negotiations.
