The vessel, equipped with modern weapon systems, significantly enhances its combat capabilities. The Ukrainian Navy emphasized that all previous technical issues have been addressed, with upgrades focused on ensuring maximum combat efficiency and protection. Notably, the ship’s air defense systems have been reinforced.
Ivan Mazepa is the first corvette of the Ada class to be built for Ukraine and is expected to become a flagship of the Ukrainian Navy. It is designed to replace the Hetman Sahaydachny frigate, which was sunk by Ukrainian forces in March 2022 to prevent capture following the Russian invasion.
The construction of the corvette began in September 2021 at the RMK Marine shipyard in Turkey. The vessel was launched into the water in October 2022. As of March 2024, Ukrainian personnel have been undergoing training to serve aboard the new corvette.
