Ukrainian Drone Blinds Russian Air Defenses by Knocking Out Rare Kasta-2E2 Radar System

Ukraine’s 92nd Assault Brigade has destroyed a Russian Kasta-2E2 radar system using a loitering munition, in what marks the third confirmed strike against Russian air defense radars in October.
According to a video published on October 18 by Serhii Prytula Charity Foundation, the radar was first located by a domestically produced Shark reconnaissance drone, then targeted with a precision-guided drone munition.

Що це дає?
- У ворога знижується координація та здатність виявляти наші засоби розвідки та ураження.
- Їх системи не можуть своєчасно реагувати на загрози.

The strike reportedly hit the radar’s antenna array, rendering the system inoperable.
“Your donations to the Jaws initiative allow us to identify key radar stations and ‘open the window’ for precision strikes deep behind enemy lines,” Prytula said in a statement.
The attack was carried out as part of the Jaws crowdfunding initiative, launched by Prytula’s foundation earlier this year to equip Ukrainian units with locally manufactured Shark drones and loitering munitions.
The campaign initially sought to raise ₴200 million (approximately $5 million), but the target was later increased to ₴500 million amid high demand.
The Kasta-2E2 (Russian designation 39N6) is a mobile, two-coordinate radar operating in the decimeter band. It provides 360-degree surveillance and is designed to detect and track low-flying air targets.

The system can determine target coordinates, trajectory, and altitude using either single-beam or dual-beam configurations.
Radar data from the Kasta-2E2 is transmitted to air defense command systems, either by radio or cable link, and can be integrated into both air force and ground-based air defense networks. It is also employed for air traffic control in military airfield zones.
Earlier, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk stated that Russian air defenses accidentally shot down a Su-30SM fighter jet over occupied Crimea while responding to Ukrainian drone attacks.
