Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SSO) struck a key Russian S-400 air defense system in occupied Crimea, destroying its radar with attack drones overnight, the Ukrainian military confirmed on September 30.

The SSO said the strike targeted the radar component of the advanced S-400 “Triumf” system, a vital element that provides surveillance and guidance functions. Without it, the entire system is rendered ineffective.

“Symbolically, the enemy’s costly air-defense system, designed in part to counter UAVs, was neutralized by our strike drones,” Ukraine’s Special Operations Command wrote.

While the exact model of the radar system was not disclosed, military analysts note that the radar acts as the “eyes” of the S-400, and its loss significantly undermines Russia’s ability to track and intercept aerial threats.

Earlier, SSO destroyed key components of a Russian S-400 “Triumf” surface-to-air missile system located in Russia’s Kaluga region. The operation, which took place overnight on September 5, targeted both a radar station and a missile launcher—central elements of the S-400’s air defense capabilities.
