Ukrainian Forces Eliminate Akhmat Battalion Commander in Kursk Region

Ukrainian Defense Forces have eliminated Buvaysar Khasanovich Umkhanov, a commander of the Akhmat special forces battalion, during operations in Russia’s Kursk region.
According to a statement by Apti Alaudinov, Deputy Chief of the Russian Armed Forces' Military-Political Directorate, Umkhanov, known by the call sign “Tarzan,” was killed during a strike on a command post where his unit was stationed.
Umkhanov served as a platoon commander in the “Hunter” battalion of the 4th Akhmat Special Purpose Brigade, operating under the Russian Ministry of Defense. His unit was tasked with maintaining control over Russia’s state border in the Kursk region.
According to open-source data, Umkhanov had previously been listed in the Myrotvorets database for his alleged involvement in the killing of civilians and acts of looting during the occupation of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions in 2022.
The Akhmat units, named after former Chechen leader Akhmat Kadyrov, are affiliated with Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov and have been integrated into the structure of Russia’s armed forces since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
These forces have been implicated in numerous human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and looting during operations in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions.
Several members and commanders of the Akhmat units have been sanctioned internationally for their roles in war crimes committed on Ukrainian territory.
Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Forces eliminated “Amur,” the commander of the Akhmat UAV unit affiliated with Ramzan Kadyrov. Operating under Russia’s Ministry of Defense, his unit specialized in FPV drones, fiber-optic systems, and loitering munitions. “Amur” was reportedly active in Russia’s Kursk region at the time of his death.
