Ukrainian Forces Recapture Position, Detain Russian Sniper and Signal Operator Near Lyman

Ukrainian forces have captured two Russian servicemembers—a sniper and a signal operator—during a recent combat operation near the city of Lyman in Donetsk region, according to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) on January 28.
The joint raid was carried out by the 10th Special Detachment “DOZOR” of the SBGS and the 53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The operation targeted Russian-held positions in the Lyman direction and resulted in the restoration of a previously lost Ukrainian strongpoint.
The Ukrainian units engaged Russian troops in a firefight before reclaiming the position. Two members of Russia’s armed forces were detained during the operation and transferred to relevant authorities. According to the SBGS, filtration procedures confirmed the detainees’ roles as a sniper and a signal operator.
The operation was reportedly conducted in close coordination with other units from Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps.
The Lyman axis continues to be an area of intense Russian pressure. In January, Russian forces stepped up attempts to infiltrate the city, located in the northern part of Donetsk region.

In a public statement, Viktor Tregubov, Head of Communications for the Joint Forces Task Group, explained the broader significance of the area: “The Lyman direction is part of Russia’s push toward the Slovyansk–Kramatorsk urban agglomeration from the northeast. It’s strategically important for their operations in Donetsk region.”
The SBGS also released footage of the joint combat operation, showing the moment Ukrainian personnel engaged and detained the Russian soldiers. In previous weeks, Ukrainian officers have also conducted clearing operations inside the city of Lyman itself, targeting Russian troops who had entered residential areas.
Earlier in January, Ukrainian officers from the 63rd Mechanised Brigade personally led a raid in the town of Lyman, capturing three Russian infiltrators hiding in a basement. The Russians had set up a communications outpost and were reportedly awaiting reinforcements.
