Ukrainian forces destroyed a rare North Korean-made self-propelled artillery system, the M1989 Koksan, in the Donetsk region, according to a video released by the Muramasa unit of the 109th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade on April 14.
The strike was carried out using precision FPV (first-person view) strike drones. The artillery position had been previously identified by aerial reconnaissance operators from the 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Aerial Systems “Ptakhy Madyara.”
The footage shows multiple drones striking the artillery system, which was hidden in a wooded area. The Koksan was operating in the Pokrovsk direction, where intense battles continued between Ukrainian defenders and Russian occupation forces.
“We continue our operations in the Pokrovsk sector using DYKYIRIZ XL drones from the Sternenko Foundation. Today’s targets included a self-propelled gun, some Russian vehicles, and a motorcycle. Vengeance for the Sumy will be scorching,” the Muramasa unit wrote.
The Koksan is a North Korean heavy artillery platform, weighing 40 tons and firing a rare 170mm caliber shell. It has a reported range of up to 40 km with standard rounds and up to 60 km with rocket-assisted projectiles.
These systems have been supporting Russian forces with long-range fire across multiple fronts. According to Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, Russia received 120 Koksan units from North Korea and is expected to receive another 120 in the future.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces successfully identified and targeted three North Korean-produced Koksan self-propelled artillery systems in Russia’s Kursk region.
Operators of the Brigade detected the artillery positions and adjusted fire for a strike carried out by HIMARS, which employed both high-explosive fragmentation and cluster munitions.
