A North Korean-made self-propelled artillery system “Koksan” was destroyed in a precision strike carried out by Ukrainian forces using HIMARS in eastern Ukraine, military sources confirmed on August 1.

According to the press service of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, the operation was directed by the 14th Separate UAV Regiment. Reconnaissance was conducted by a drone team known as “Krim,” which identified the Koksan gun and relayed its coordinates for targeting. A video of the strike was recorded by the UAV Regiment.

“The fire correction ensured a direct hit on the target, which caused a secondary detonation of the ammunition. The artillery piece was fully destroyed, and six crew members were eliminated,” the regiment said in an official statement.

The strike took place on one of the active frontlines, though the exact location was not disclosed for operational security reasons. Visual confirmation of the secondary explosion and the complete loss of the artillery system was recorded by aerial surveillance.

North Korean 170 mm “Koksan” guns, originally designed for long-range shelling, have increasingly appeared in Russian service since late 2023, marking a deepening of Pyongyang’s military support for Moscow. These transfers have been documented by multiple international monitoring groups.

The destruction of this Koksan follows earlier reported engagements with North Korean-supplied weapons in Ukraine. On March 4, the Ukrainian military first confirmed the presence of such systems on the battlefield, prompting strong reactions from South Korea and the United States.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian forces carried out a precision HIMARS strike against three North Korean‑made Koksan self‑propelled artillery systems in Russia’s Kursk region.
