Russian Drones Hit Sumy Passenger Train, Then Strike Again as Firefighters Work

Russian drones struck a suburban diesel train in Ukraine's Sumy region, injuring at least 10 people, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS).

The strike set the train's locomotive and one passenger car ablaze. Rescuers battled the flames while carrying the wounded to waiting ambulances, the service reported.

As the crews worked, Russian forces struck the same site a second time. The Real War Telegram channel described the follow-up as "a repeat cynical strike" in a post published online.

No members of the emergency service were hurt in the second attack, the State Emergency Service noted. Its crews extinguished every remaining pocket of fire at the scene.

Rescue officers and local officials then evacuated 19 passengers from the area. Responders moved them out aboard a State Emergency Service armored vehicle and a municipal bus, the service added.

The strikes complicated rail traffic across the region, forcing authorities to reroute travelers by road. In total, emergency crews and local officials transported 60 people to designated safe points, according to the service.

Strikes on Ukraine's railways have grown more frequent in recent weeks. On August 13, a Russian attack drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train in the Odesa region, killing the driver and his assistant.

All 340 passengers aboard, including 67 children, were evacuated by bus without injury. On September 1, a strike on a railway depot in Kyiv killed seven people, six of them railway employees.
