Russian Drone Strikes Civilian Freight Train in Donetsk Region, Injures Train Operator

On May 12, a Russian drone targeted a civilian freight train in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, injuring the train operator, according to Ukrzaliznytsia on May 12.
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) reportedly struck the locomotive, causing a shrapnel wound to the operator’s leg. The injured railway worker received immediate medical assistance and was hospitalized. His condition is currently not life-threatening.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasized that attacks on railway infrastructure and rolling stock continue despite ongoing international discussions around ceasefire proposals. “Russian UAVs again targeted civilian rail operations near the front line,” the company stated via Telegram.
Train crews continue to operate under hazardous conditions near active combat zones, often wearing protective gear including body armor and helmets, and carrying medical kits. Ukrzaliznytsia noted that maintaining rail operations in frontline areas remains a critical task.
According to the company, train movement in the affected area was not halted by the incident.
Earlier, nearly 200 Russian strikes were recorded in Sumy region on May 8 and 9, despite Moscow’s declared Victory Day ceasefire. According to regional authorities, the attacks killed three civilians, injured seven, and damaged dozens of civilian structures, including homes, schools, and power infrastructure.
