Ukrainian Intelligence Hack Russian Internet Giant, Disrupting 3,100 Network Devices

The Cyber Corps of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has carried out a large-scale cyberattack on one of Russia’s private internet service providers supplying Russian security agencies, Babel reported on August 11, citing intelligence sources.

According to the sources, the Moscow-headquartered Filanco Group delivers internet and hosting services to more than 20,000 clients, including major Russian telecom operators such as Beeline, MGTS, and 24tv, as well as various state security structures.

As a result of the cyberattack, 600 virtual machines, 24 hypervisors, and approximately 3,100 pieces of network switching equipment were rendered inoperable. Ukrainian cyber operatives also managed to destroy more than 800 terabytes of stored data.

In addition to infrastructure disruption, the attackers accessed and “zeroed out” company-linked internal account wallets, removing funds equivalent to $1.3 million. Filanco’s online store, which specialized in selling so-called “emergency suitcases” to Russian security personnel, was also compromised, with the attackers replacing its homepage content.

Filanco has so far not issued an official statement on the incident.
