The Russian convoy, traveling along a dirt road near a forested area, was targeted by the Leopard tank, which operated from a defensive position within a nearby village. The tank engaged the column with direct fire, utilizing the cover provided by local buildings to maintain a tactical advantage.

“While maneuvering, the tank crew fired with precision, striking at least five enemy armored vehicles. Some were hit multiple times, resulting in the destruction of the entire column, including the personnel it was transporting,” stated OSUV Khortytsia on its Telegram channel.

The operation was conducted by the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, whose members effectively ambushed the advancing Russian forces.

Leopard 2A4 in Ukraine

The Leopard 2A4, one of the most widely used Western tanks, has become a significant asset for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Initially produced in the late 1980s, this model remains a formidable force due to its balance of firepower, protection, and mobility. Ukraine has received two primary variants of these tanks: the older Leopard 1A5 and the more advanced Leopard 2A4 and Leopard 2A6 models.

Over 100 Leopard 2A4 and 2A6 tanks were delivered by countries such as Germany, Spain, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Portugal. These modern tanks have played a pivotal role in defending Ukrainian territory and leading offensives, including operations in regions like Kursk region. Additionally, Ukraine received hundreds of refurbished Leopard 1A5 tanks.

Key features of the Leopard 2A4:

  • Main armament: The tank is equipped with a 120mm Rh120 smoothbore gun, capable of firing advanced kinetic energy rounds with high precision.

  • Fire control system: A modern digital fire control system significantly improves accuracy by calculating variables such as target movement, distance, and projectile trajectory.

  • Optics: The tank features a dual-axis stabilized gunner’s sight (EMES-15) with a laser rangefinder, thermal imaging, and 12x magnification for day and night operations. The commander’s panoramic sight (PERI-R17) provides 360-degree situational awareness.

  • Protection: While earlier Leopard 2A4 models had standard composite armor, later batches received additional upgrades to enhance protection against kinetic and explosive threats.

  • Mobility: Powered by a 1,500-horsepower MTU MB873 diesel engine, the Leopard 2A4 can reach speeds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph) on roads, ensuring tactical flexibility.

These tanks were first deployed in combat by Ukraine in June 2023 during the summer counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia region. Despite being an older variant, the Leopard 2A4 has been upgraded with Ukrainian-made Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor, enhancing its ability to withstand modern anti-tank threats.
