Ukrainian Mi-8 Navy Helicopter Downs 12 Shaheds Over Sea in Intense 3-Hour Battle

A Ukrainian Navy Mi-8 helicopter crew shot down 12 Russian Shahed-type attack drones in just three hours during a high-risk interception mission, according to footage released by the Ukrainian Navy on March 24.
The crew used onboard weapons to engage the targets, intercepting the drones over the sea to reduce the risk of debris falling on populated areas.

Operating in such conditions comes with significant danger. Flying over open water is more challenging than flying over land, and crews also face the constant threat of potential encounters with Russian aircraft.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on army aviation to counter drones, a tactic that began to expand in the summer of 2024.
The effectiveness of helicopter-based interceptions depends heavily on pilot skill and the timely detection of incoming targets.
At the same time, engaging drones at close range carries serious risks. If a strike fails to neutralize the drone’s warhead, it could detonate near the helicopter, potentially damaging the aircraft with shrapnel.
For these missions, Ukraine employs specially equipped Mi-8 helicopters fitted with electro-optical systems capable of day and night operation, situational awareness tools, and onboard weapon systems.

Some of these helicopters are armed with M134 machine guns, enabling rapid-fire engagement of aerial targets.
Earlier, footage showed the crew of a Ukrainian An-28 light transport aircraft destroying a Russian Shahed-type attack drone at extremely close range, offering a rare glimpse into one of the most unconventional air-defense methods used in the war.
