Ukrainian Marines have claimed gold at the Strong Spirit’s Games in Madrid, according to the 30th Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Navy on August 27.
Veterans Denys Chabanov and Ihor Iliushkin won gold medals at the international multi-sport competition in adaptive sports for combat veterans. Their victory stands as a powerful symbol of the resilience and spirit of Ukrainian warriors, proving their strength not only on the battlefield but also on the global sporting stage.
The Strong Spirit’s Games is a tournament initiated by Ukraine. Its mission is to support defenders, highlight the vital role of sports in restoring physical health, aid psychosocial adaptation, and strengthen the moral resilience of military personnel.

This year’s competition brings together athletes from five countries: Ukraine, Spain, the United States, Ireland, and Estonia. Team Ukraine includes 62 veterans, both men and women, as well as servicemembers who took part in combat operations and sustained injuries.
Menawhile, war veteran Roman Kashpur from Vinnytsia region has set two new national records. Kashpur established a record for the fastest marathon run on a prosthetic, completing the Berlin Marathon in 3 hours, 55 minutes, and 2 seconds.
He also became the first Ukrainian para-athlete to complete all six of the world’s major prestige marathons on a prosthetic—an accomplishment that underscores the determination and strength of Ukraine’s defenders in overcoming challenges both in war and in life.
Earlier, a new football club called Nezlamni has been established in Kharkiv for Ukrainian war veterans and civilians who have undergone limb amputations.
