The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution titled “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine,” a text put forward by Ukraine and Latvia, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, on February 24.

The resolution calls for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and reiterates the Assembly’s call for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with international law, including the UN Charter.

It also urges the complete exchange of prisoners of war, the release of all unlawfully detained persons, and the return of all civilians who were forcibly transferred or deported, including children, describing these steps as a significant confidence-building measure.

The resolution was supported by 107 states, opposed by 12, and saw 51 abstentions, with Hungary and Serbia among those abstaining.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha welcomed the adoption, saying that at defining moments, the international community must be clear and that this vote delivered that clarity.

The text notes with concern that the full-scale invasion has persisted for four years, reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders.

As well, it expresses grave concern over continued and intensified attacks on civilians, civilian objects, and critical energy infrastructure, according to the document.

Earlier, it was reported that the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on Russia to ensure the immediate, safe, and unconditional return of all Ukrainian children unlawfully transferred or deported during the war, with 91 member states voting in favor.
