UN Secretary-General Warns of Wider War as Middle East Crisis Enters Second Month

The United Nations has issued a warning as the Middle East conflict enters its second month, Secretary-General António Guterres remarked at a Press Encounter on April 2.
He stated the world is “on the edge of a wider war that would engulf the whole Middle East with dramatic impacts around the globe.”

Speaking from New York, Guterres emphasized that every day the conflict continues, “the scale of devastation grows” and the “perils to our world grow.”
A central theme of the Secretary-General’s address was the catastrophic impact of the ongoing blockade in the Persian Gulf. “When the Strait of Hormuz is strangled, the world’s poorest and most vulnerable cannot breathe,” Guterres warned, citing the struggle of people in nations like the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique who are facing skyrocketing food and energy costs.
He stressed that while many aspects of the war remain uncertain, one thing is clear: “If the drums of war keep beating, escalation will only make all of this worse.”
In a direct address to the belligerents, Guterres delivered a blunt message. “To the United States and Israel, it is high time to stop the war that is inflicting immense human suffering and already triggering devastating economic consequences,” he said. He simultaneously called on Iran “to stop attacking their neighbours,” noting that the Security Council has reaffirmed the absolute necessity of respecting navigational rights along critical maritime routes.

As a concrete step toward de-escalation, Guterres announced he is dispatching his Personal Envoy, Jean Arnault, to the region to support ongoing diplomatic efforts. These efforts, he insisted, must be “anchored firmly in international law, including the UN Charter.”
He reminded global leaders that “conflicts do not end on their own,” urging them to choose dialogue over destruction while the option still exists. “That choice still exists. And it must be made—now.”
The UN’s plea for a peaceful path forward coincides with a breakdown in NATO unity over the conflict in the Middle East. While António Guterres calls for a cessation of hostilities, US President Donald Trump recently threatened to withdraw from the alliance entirely. He cited a “betrayal” by European partners like France, Spain, and Italy, who have blocked US access to their airspace and bases for Operation Epic Fury, conducted by the US against Iran.
