Poland Deploys 28 K2 Black Panther Tanks Near Russia as It Hardens Eastern Defenses

Poland has received 28 South Korean-made K2 Black Panther tanks for its 16th Mechanized Division, which is stationed near the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on August 25.
The latest delivery is part of a contract signed between Poland and South Korea in August 2025.

Future deliveries will include the K2PL, a Polish-adapted version of the South Korean tank that will be produced partly in Poland and incorporate domestically manufactured components.
“This is a significant step in expanding the production capabilities of our industry and another consistent effort to strengthen Poland’s security,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote.
According to Polish outlet Onet, deliveries of 64 K2PL tanks are scheduled to begin in 2028. Three of the vehicles will be manufactured by Hyundai Rotem in South Korea, while the remaining 61 will be produced at Poland’s Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar-Łabędy plant.
The K2PL will feature several modifications and upgrades compared with the original South Korean design, including enhanced protection against drones.
The Polish variant is expected to employ a two-layer counter-drone system. An electronic warfare system will be designed to jam and disrupt incoming drones, while an active protection system will provide a second layer of defense by physically intercepting threats.
The K2PL will also feature reinforced armor and a remotely operated weapon station equipped with a heavy machine gun.
The delivery comes as Poland steps up preparations for potential security threats from Russia. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said earlier this month that Warsaw was preparing for the possibility of a full-scale war amid concerns that Moscow could stage a major provocation within the coming months.
According to Tomczyk, the Polish government and military no longer regard a possible confrontation with Russia as an unthinkable scenario and are making concrete preparations for such a contingency.
Warsaw is therefore planning how the country would operate under the most severe wartime conditions, while officials continue to emphasize that they hope those preparations will never need to be put into practice.
