US Calls for Shift in UN Resolution, Aligning Ukraine’s Actions with Russia’s Aggression

The United States has proposed a resolution to the United Nations that equates the actions of Ukraine with those of Russia, according to the Financial Times on February 24. The U.S. has urged Ukraine and the European Union to withdraw their own resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In its place, Washington has introduced a new text, calling for the recognition of both countries' actions in the ongoing war and acknowledging the tragic loss of life resulting from the war.
The proposal comes amid ongoing discussions at the UN and within the G7, where there is continued disagreement over whether Russia should be held fully accountable for its invasion of Ukraine.
Both the United States and the European Union have put forward competing resolutions for a vote at the UN General Assembly, while G7 diplomats spent the weekend negotiating whether a joint statement would reference Russia’s military aggression.
According to two unnamed officials, Washington’s call for a shift in the resolution aims to balance the perspectives of both sides in the war against Ukraine.
The votes on the U.S. and European resolutions are expected to occur after the release of the G7 statement during a virtual meeting among world leaders this February 24.
There have also been reports suggesting Washington has not yet decided whether to support the UN resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine.
In related news, Republican lawmakers initiated efforts to withdraw the United States from the United Nations, citing the organization’s failure to serve American interests and its contradiction with former President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy.
