US Conducts Minuteman III ICBM Test Launch to Reinforce Nuclear Deterrence
Just hours after polls closed on Election Day, the US military tested a hypersonic-capable Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, Vandenberg Space Force Base press service reported on November 6.
The unarmed missile was launched within a scheduled window of 11:01 pm to 5:01 am.
Military officials emphasized the routine nature of the test, noting it had been scheduled years prior.
The exercise aims to demonstrate the “readiness of US nuclear forces” and reinforce “confidence in the nation’s nuclear deterrence,” particularly amidst rising global tensions and concerns over the potential for World War III.
During the test, the ICBM is expected to travel approximately 4,200 miles from Vandenberg to Kwajalein Atoll in the North Pacific, a journey estimated to take 22 minutes.
Capable of reaching speeds over 15,000 miles per hour, the missile could potentially strike any location in the world within 30 minutes of launch.
Around 33,700 personnel are assigned to two Numbered Air Forces, nine wings, two squadrons stationed separately, and one detachment within the continental United States, as well as deployed to various locations worldwide.
Earlier, North Korea confirmed the launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) aimed at waters off its eastern coast, marking the longest flight duration recorded for a North Korean missile.
Ukrainian MFA later strongly condemned such training.
