North Korea launched at least 7 short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Japan’s Ministry of Defense statements on November 5.

This marks the second round of missile launches by Pyongyang in just a few days.

The missiles reportedly flew around 400 kilometers (248 miles), with South Korean forces monitoring the launch in real-time and sharing data with US and Japanese allies.

In anticipation of further potential missile activity from Pyongyang, South Korean forces have “increased vigilance and surveillance.”

Japan’s government stated that North Korea’s missile launches “threaten the peace and security of Japan.”

The missile launches come just days after joint air drills between South Korea, Japan, and the United States, which experts suggest may have prompted North Korea’s response.

Han Kwon Hee of the Korean Defense Industry Association said that Pyongyang’s latest launches are likely “a direct response to these trilateral military exercises.”

Meanwhile, Joseph Dempsey, an expert on North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, hinted that the timing of the launch may be connected to US presidential election.

“The timing of North Korea’s launch, coinciding with the US election, is unlikely a coincidence,” Dempsey wrote on X, suggesting that while the launches may be part of a missile system test, they also carry a clear political signal.

Earlier, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine condemned North Korea’s latest test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
