The Pentagon is repositioning a US aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East amid escalating unrest in Iran, US outlet NewsNation reported, citing sources familiar with the deployment on January 14.
The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by its escort vessels and at least one submarine, is moving from the South China Sea into the area of responsibility of US Central Command, according to the report.

CENTCOM’s operational zone spans Northeast Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Central and South Asia, covering 21 countries including Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan.
The redeployment is expected to take roughly one week and would significantly strengthen the US military presence near Iran’s borders.

The move comes as protests inside Iran continue to intensify. On January 11, Donald Trump warned that the United States would intervene to support protesters seeking freedom if Iranian authorities resorted to killing demonstrators.
By the 18th day of unrest, reports indicated at least 2,615 people had been killed.

US officials have not publicly detailed the mission parameters of the carrier group, but the timing underscores growing concern in Washington over instability in Iran and the potential for regional spillover.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ukraine was closely monitoring developments in Iran and the mass protests there, describing them as reflecting the Iranian people’s desire for freedom, dignity, and a better future.
