Iran’s protest death toll rose sharply as Tehran warned it could strike US bases in neighboring countries and Washington began withdrawing some personnel from regional bases, according to Reuters on January 14.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran had warned countries “from Saudi Arabia and UAE to Turkey” that US bases on their territory would be attacked if Washington targets Iran, and said Iran had asked regional states to dissuade the US from striking.

A US official said Washington was withdrawing some personnel from key bases as a precaution, and three diplomats told Reuters some personnel had been advised to leave the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, described by one of them as a “posture change” rather than an ordered evacuation.

US President Donald Trump has urged Iranians to keep protesting and said “help is on the way,” the outlet reported, adding that he has threatened intervention and vowed “very strong action” if Iran executes protesters.

An Israeli official told Reuters an Israeli assessment was that Trump had decided to intervene, though the timing and scope were unclear, while a Western official cited by Reuters said Iran’s security apparatus remained in control and the government did not appear on the verge of collapse.

Reuters said the unrest began on December 28 as protests over dire economic conditions and the rial’s collapse and escalated into wider demonstrations against clerical rule, described by Iran and foreign governments as the most violent since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran’s armed forces chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, said Iran “had never faced this volume of destruction,” Reuters reported, while France’s foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, called it “the most violent repression in Iran’s contemporary history.”

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry condemned Iran’s crackdown on protesters, urged Tehran to stop violence and respect peaceful assembly and free speech, and called for increased international pressure.
