On December 4, the US Department of State announced visa restrictions against five Russian officials accused of involvement in the forced deportation, displacement, and detention of Ukrainian children.

According to the official statement, many of the children were subjected to identity changes, had their origins concealed, and were exposed to pro-Russian propaganda and militarization, with some being adopted by Russian families.

"The Kremlin authorities have created numerous obstacles to the return of these children to Ukraine. Russia’s continued disregard for its international legal obligations to report the whereabouts of these children makes ensuring their safe return nearly impossible," the US State Department stated.

The United States emphasized its commitment to using all available tools to support Ukraine’s efforts in locating and repatriating its unlawfully transferred or deported children.

"We remain steadfast in promoting justice for victims and ensuring accountability for those responsible for Russia’s human rights abuses, including through today’s announced visa restrictions," the statement concluded.

To date, Ukraine has successfully repatriated 1,019 children from Russian-controlled and occupied areas. However, nearly 20,000 more remain in Russian-held territories, forcibly relocated and separated from their families.
