Von der Leyen: Ukraine’s EU Accession Is Key Security Guarantee Against Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is a key security guarantee, according to her statement on social media X on December 30.
Von der Leyen wrote on X after what she described as a discussion with European leaders on support for Ukraine, its security, and reconstruction.

“Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in joining the EU. This is also a key security guarantee,” she said in the post, adding that successive EU enlargements had shown the bloc and Europe as a whole benefit from expansion.
Ukrainian media also cited President Zelenskyy as saying last week that a 20-point framework produced during talks between Kyiv and Washington was a basic document for ending the war, including a point that Ukraine would join the EU within a specifically defined timeframe and receive short-term privileged access to Europe’s market.

The outlet noted that there was previously reported accelerated EU accession could form part of a peace plan being discussed among Kyiv, Brussels, and Washington, though it said Ukraine has not yet officially completed any of the 36 steps in the EU accession process.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Commission and European leaders approved the start of Ukraine’s EU membership talks, with Ursula von der Leyen backing the move and praising Ukraine’s reform efforts as it begins structured negotiations toward accession.
