“We Don’t Know What Ukraine Is”: Orbán Slams Ukraine’s EU Bid

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Ukraine remains an “undefined entity,” and that the results of the so-called Voks2025 “referendum” allowed Hungary to halt its path toward EU membership. He made the remarks during a Friday broadcast on state radio, according to Telex on June 27.

“We don’t even know what Ukraine is today, where its borders lie,” Orbán emphasized, adding that due to such uncertainty, countries from the former Soviet bloc were first admitted into NATO—which could guarantee their borders—and only later joined the EU. In Ukraine’s case, he claimed, this scenario is unacceptable: “NATO cannot accept Ukraine, because that would mean an immediate war.”

The Hungarian leader stressed that although he understands Ukrainians and their struggle, his country cannot help at the cost of self-destruction.

“Ukraine’s EU membership would mean destroying ourselves. We would be instantly dragged into a war with Russia and bring that war onto EU territory—and thus onto Hungary,” Orbán declared.

He added that “thanks to more than two million votes in Voks2025,” the Hungarian government succeeded in halting Ukraine’s EU accession.

Earlier, European Union leaders had formally approved the launch of accession talks with Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in Kyiv’s pursuit of EU membership amid Russia’s continued war of aggression.
