For the second time this week, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is at risk of a total blackout due to Russian attacks, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported on November 21.

Russian strike knocked out one of the two power lines connecting the Russian-occupied plant to Ukraine’s energy grid. Currently, the facility is operating on a single remaining line.

“If this last connection is lost, the plant will face a complete blackout,” the ministry warned. Such an event would constitute a severe violation of operational safety and could escalate into a major nuclear incident.

“This is the second time this week the ZNPP faces a real blackout threat due to Russian strikes,” said Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

“Today, the IAEA  Board of Governors is meeting in Vienna. We insist on the urgent and full implementation of the resolution to return control of the occupied plant to Ukraine. Only this can ensure the safe operation of the ZNPP,” he added.

According to the Ministry of Energy, repair crews are prepared to restore the plant’s full power supply as soon as the security situation allows.
