Zelenskyy: European Union Must Approach Peace Negotiations From Position of Strength
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the European Council, emphasizing the critical need for Europe’s unity and strength in any future peace negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine during his speech in Brussels on December 19.
“Europe must have a seat at the negotiation table when the time comes, just as Ukraine must,” Zelenskyy stated. “The EU must approach these discussions from a position of strength, and Europe’s strength lies in its unity.”
Zelenskyy underscored the importance of a coordinated effort to achieve lasting peace, rather than a temporary cessation of hostilities. He warned against allowing Russian leader Vladimir Putin to exploit any pause in the war to regroup. “We must push Moscow toward a genuine, sustainable, and guaranteed peace,” Zelenskyy urged.
Zelenskyy also pointed to the influence of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has signaled plans to escalate efforts to end the war early next year.
“Depends on us whether Europe will support him with a strong, united voice,” he concluded, highlighting the EU’s pivotal role in shaping the outcome of future peace talks.
Previously, Zelenskyy confirmed that discussions in Brussels included the idea of deploying a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference following the meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelenskyy shared that consultations on the proposal are ongoing with support from Macron.
