In his evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainians were marking a fourth Christmas under Russia’s full-scale war and that Russia had rejected a proposed Christmas truce and struck Ukraine’s energy system on December 24.

Zelenskyy stated that Russia “not only rejected the proposal to stop the killings at least on this holy day,” but also carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which he said caused power outages, while continuing assaults along the front line.

He said Ukraine valued Pope Leo XIV’s continued attention to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine and shared the pontiff’s disappointment that Russia had refused a recent proposal for a Christmas ceasefire.

“It is important that people around the world do not remain silent,” Zelenskyy said, adding that it was important not to allow Russia “to normalize cruelty, terror and aggression against our people.”

He called on “all responsible leaders” to support peace and said Ukraine was grateful for each show of solidarity, while wishing peaceful holidays to families worldwide and a happy Christmas Eve to those celebrating.
