Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared an update on his productive conversation with US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The key takeaway from the discussion was the mutual emphasis on ending the war as soon as possible. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to President Trump for his efforts toward securing a just and lasting peace, he stated on his official Telegram channel on August 5.

Zelenskyy noted that it was critical to stop the killings immediately, emphasizing that the war could have ended months ago if Russia had not prolonged the it. Both leaders coordinated their positions and exchanged assessments on the situation, with Zelenskyy highlighting the increased brutality of Russian strikes.

The Ukrainian president informed Trump about Russia’s attacks on Kyiv and other cities, ensuring that the US president was fully aware of the ongoing threats. Zelenskyy also discussed the importance of continued sanctions against Russia, stressing that Moscow’s economy is in freefall, which makes the sanctions’ impact a significant factor in their decision-making.

“Of course, we discussed sanctions against Russia. Their economy continues to decline, which is why Moscow is paying so much attention to this prospect and President Trump’s determination. This could change a lot,” Ukrainian President stated.

The conversation also touched on joint European efforts to aid Ukraine’s defense, with Zelenskyy confirming that the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have pledged over a billion dollars to provide Ukraine with American weaponry. Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for these contributions, noting that cooperation with NATO allies will continue to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

In addition, Zelenskyy mentioned the ongoing bilateral defense cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, particularly regarding a drone agreement. He confirmed that Ukraine had prepared the draft of the agreement and is ready for detailed discussions and signing. This potential agreement, according to Zelenskyy, could become one of the strongest deals for Ukraine’s defense.

Zelenskyy closed the message by thanking President Trump and the American people for their unwavering support in protecting lives and securing Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Previously, US President Donald Trump claimed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would have no choice but to end the war in Ukraine if global oil prices dropped by $10 per barrel, according to the interview with CNBC.
