Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the policies of the United States and the administration of President Donald Trump are contributing to Russia’s reintegration into the international arena, effectively ending the long-standing isolation of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
According to Zelenskyy, the U.S. approach toward Russia, particularly following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, is being perceived positively in the Kremlin.
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on February 19, he noted that recent diplomatic engagements, including talks between U.S. and Russian representatives in Riyadh, have resulted in Russia being treated as a “victim” rather than an aggressor.
“I believe the United States is helping Putin emerge from years of isolation,” Zelenskyy said. He also addressed statements suggesting that the U.S. is responsible for 90% of military assistance to Ukraine, emphasizing that while Ukraine is grateful for support, the reality is more complex. “I would like to see more truth from President Trump’s team,” he added.
Zelenskyy expressed concern that after three years of full-scale war, some U.S. officials are referring to Russia’s actions as a "conflict" and adopting a more conciliatory stance. He warned that such an approach could soften the perception of Russia’s occupation and aggression.
The Ukrainian president reiterated that his country is prepared for any developments and will continue to advocate for strong international pressure on Russia.
Earlier, U.S. intelligence sources told NBC that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is not genuinely interested in peace negotiations with Ukraine but sees them as a tactical move to further his military objectives. Officials warned that Putin still believes he can outlast Ukraine and Europe in the war and remains committed to his maximalist goals.
