Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the United States appears eager to appease Vladimir Putin by seeking a swift resolution to Russia’s war against Ukraine, which could create a situation reminiscent of Afghanistan in 2021.

Zelenskyy noted that in an interview with ARD released on February 18.

The Ukrainian President criticized negotiation tactics that abandon key demands, specifically referring to U.S. government statements suggesting Ukraine will not join NATO.

He recalled the chaotic 2021 U.S. troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, which led to the Taliban’s swift takeover. Zelenskyy warned that disregard for human life resulted in tragedy and cautioned against rushing to end conflicts without careful consideration.

“You can’t just take this issue off the table. That’s not how it works. I don’t think anyone wants an Afghanistan 2.0,” Zelenskyy said.

Additionally, the President responded to the U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s remark that returning to Ukraine’s 2014 borders is an “unrealistic objective.”

“Of course, we will reclaim everything. Respect for international law will return. If not today, then tomorrow,” Zelenskyy said.

Reuters reported on February 14 that U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that he did not believe Russia would “allow” Ukraine to join NATO, criticizing President Joe Biden’s administration for raising the issue in the first place.
