Syrskyi Dismissed as Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi from his post as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on June 21.

Public demonstrations erupted across major Ukrainian cities as participants demanded changes to the nation’s military leadership during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The rallies followed the dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose management of military technology and long-range strike capabilities received strong public support. Activists and public figures gathered to demand reforms in military strategy and procurement.
Demonstrators emphasized the importance of maintaining technological momentum on the front lines, particularly the rapid deployment of specialized drones and robotic systems.
Protesters called for closer alignment between military command and defense production to optimize resource distribution for combat units. The public actions focused on securing strategic accountability and operational efficiency within the defense sector.
Oleksandr Syrskyi served as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after taking office in February 2024. Prior to leading the military, he commanded Ukraine’s Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024 and played a pivotal role in major defensive and offensive actions during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Syrskyi oversaw the successful defense of Kyiv in early 2022, for which he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, and subsequently planned the Kharkiv counteroffensive in autumn 2022, liberating vast areas in eastern Ukraine.
Earlier in his career, General Syrskyi commanded military operations in eastern Ukraine starting in 2014, including overseeing the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Debaltseve in 2015. Over a decade of operational leadership, he focused on modernizing command structures and managing frontline units across critical sectors, including Bakhmut and Kupiansk.
"The fact is that Oleksandr Syrskyi delivered results for Ukraine in the defense of Kyiv, in the Kharkiv offensive operation, and in the Kursk operation. A significant path has been crossed, the defense of Ukraine continues, and a worthy attitude toward every warrior is required," Zelenskyy stated.
The President expressed gratitude for the outgoing military leadership, noting that operational transitions are currently underway. "I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrskyi and to every one of our warriors for Ukraine's strong frontline positions," the President added.
In his address, Zelenskyy emphasized the national strategic goal during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"All of us share one desire—victory over the enemy and achieving conditions on the front line and through pressure on Russia that would force Russia to peace. Tomorrow we will formalize all decisions. Ukraine must emerge stronger from this situation, and it will be harder for Russia. Glory to Ukraine!" Zelenskyy declared.
On July 18, the president said he had held separate conversations with Fedorov and Syrskyi and promised that decisions concerning the military would be developed. “We are preparing decisions for the army,” Zelenskyy said following the meetings.
