The explosion took place in the Aviatorov microdistrict of Balashikha, on Koldunova Street. The area is known for housing many Russian servicemen and officers.

According to ASTRA, the blast occurred shortly after the driver got into the vehicle and began moving.

Russian media reported that a BMW X3 exploded at around 5:30 am near a residential high-rise building. The driver suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

Preliminary reports suggest the explosive device had a power equivalent to about 400 grams of TNT.

Russia’s Investigative Committee opened a criminal case and ordered a series of forensic examinations.

Russian authorities have not officially identified the person killed in the blast. However, several Russian media outlets claimed the victim was a 62-year-old lieutenant general of the Russian army.

Reports also said the man had purchased the BMW less than two years ago.

According to Russian media, witnesses saw an unknown man near the scene shortly before the explosion.

The location of the blast has drawn attention because the Aviatorov microdistrict in Balashikha was built largely for Russian military personnel and their families.

Russian journalists reported that the explosion happened near building No. 10, where apartments were distributed through structures linked to Russia’s Defense Ministry.

ASTRA also noted that the new incident occurred about 400 meters from the site where Russian general Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff, was killed in April 2025. Moskalik’s car was also blown up in Balashikha.

Earlier, an explosion in a military garrison in Russia’s Khabarovsk region targeted Major General Azatbek Omurbekov, a commander linked to war crimes in Bucha during the early stages of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
