Fire Erupts at Proton-PM Plant Producing Engines for Russia’s Angara Rockets and Rassvet Plans

A fire broke out at the Proton-PM plant near Perm, Russia, an enterprise involved in the country’s rocket and space industry, the OSINT monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported on September 2.

JSC Proton-PM is one of Russia’s leading enterprises in the rocket, space, and mechanical engineering industries.

Located more than 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the plant specializes in the production of high-powered liquid-fueled rocket engines, as well as components for the aerospace and aviation industries.

According to Ukrainian defense outlet Miilitarnyi, among the systems manufactured at the facility is the RD-191, a liquid-fueled rocket engine used in Russia’s Angara family of launch vehicles.

The Angara launch system is also linked to Russia’s plans to expand its Rassvet satellite constellation.

According to the analysis by Militarnyi, the fire likely occurred at a new production workshop used to manufacture rocket engines.

The incident comes amid previous attacks on Russian facilities involved in the production of components for the country’s missile and air defense systems. On June 22, a series of explosions was reported in Voronezh, where a semiconductor manufacturing plant was targeted.

The Telegram monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported that smoke was seen rising from the industrial facility following the strike. The plant manufactures electronic components used in Russia’s Pantsir air defense missile-gun systems, as well as components for Iskander-K and Kh-101 missiles.
