How Effective Is Ukraine’s Air Defense? September Data Reveals the Answer

Ukraine’s air defense and military aviation countered tens of thousands of Russian aerial threats in September 2026, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and various types of attack drones, providing a picture of the scale of Ukraine’s efforts to protect its airspace.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force on October 10, Ukraine’s Defense Forces destroyed more than 4,700 aerial targets and neutralized over 48,000 additional tactical-level drones throughout September.
The reported results included the destruction of 24 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 12 Kalibr cruise missiles, eight Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and eight Zircon missiles. Ukrainian forces also intercepted six Iskander-K cruise missiles and six Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles.
Russian-made Shahed drones accounted for a significant portion of the reported interceptions. Ukrainian forces destroyed 2,722 Shahed-131/136 drones and 1,935 Shahed-238 drones, bringing the combined total to 4,657.
In addition, the military reported destroying 86 S8000 Banderol weapons, 1,009 reconnaissance drones, and 719 Lancet loitering munitions.

Ukraine’s Air Force also maintained extensive aviation operations throughout the month, conducting more than 1,600 sorties. Approximately 1,300 were dedicated to fighter air cover, while more than 250 involved strikes against Russian targets and aerial support for Ukrainian ground forces.
Although the figures demonstrate the scale of Ukraine’s air defense operations, they do not provide an overall interception success rate. The Air Force did not specify the total number of Russian aerial weapons launched during September, making it impossible to determine what percentage was successfully intercepted or neutralized from these figures alone.
As Russia continues to expand its use of faster jet-powered drones, Ukraine is adapting its air defense capabilities to counter the evolving threat. More than 12 Ukrainian-made Sky Sentinel automated anti-drone turrets have already been deployed across Kyiv, with the systems successfully intercepting Russian jet-powered drones, including the Geran-5.
