NATO Integrates Ukrainian Battlefield Experience in Joint Vistula Vanguard Exercise

The NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC)  co-organized the “Vistula Vanguard 26” war game to integrate real-world combat experience from Ukrainian frontlines into NATO military exercises, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported on July 30.

Organized jointly with NATO’s Joint Force Training Centre, the project marks the first iteration of the Vistula Vanguard initiative designed to refine Alliance command post operations. The exercise focused on evaluating evolving combat tactics using live operational data provided directly by experienced Ukrainian service members, the ministry reported.

Ukrainian combat veterans contributed specialized battlefield expertise in key operational domains, including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, and combat engineering.

By testing NATO procedures and operational scenarios against active threats encountered in Ukraine, the joint exercise aimed to enhance interoperability and ensure future NATO training reflects modern high-intensity warfare conditions, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

The Vistula Vanguard exercise is part of a war gaming series to strengthen major NATO command post exercises, including LOYAL LEDA and LOYAL DOLOS. Through JATEC, Ukrainian and Allied forces continue to deepen strategic coordination and adapt command structures to emerging global security challenges.

NATO forces have also increasingly tasked combat-experienced Ukrainian drone operators to serve as a simulated adversary during alliance exercises, using their real-world tactics to test Allied readiness against modern drone threats.
