According to the Ukrainian Air Force on May 9, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with one Iskander-M ballistic missile launched from occupied Crimea and 43 drones, including Shahed-type attack UAVs, Gerbera, Italmas, and Parodiya decoy drones.
Ukraine’s air defense units, aviation, electronic warfare systems, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups were involved in repelling the attack, the Air Force said.
By 08:00 local time, Ukrainian forces had shot down or suppressed 34 drones across southern, northern, and eastern regions of the country. The military also confirmed missile and drone strikes at six locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at two additional sites.
Regional authorities reported casualties and infrastructure damage following the overnight attacks.

According to Dnipropetrovsk regional officials, Russian strikes killed two people and injured two others during attacks on the Nikopol and Synelnykove districts. Authorities said Russian forces used artillery and drones in nearly 20 separate strikes throughout the night.
In Nikopol district, attacks targeted the city of Nikopol as well as the Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Regional officials reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including private homes, a store, a kiosk, and a café.
A 35-year-old man was killed, while a 39-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition. Another injured man, aged 31, received outpatient treatment.
Officials also reported damage to a business facility and agricultural equipment in the Dubovykivska community of Synelnykove district.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, regional governor Ivan Fedorov stated that Russian forces carried out 738 strikes on 31 settlements over the past day using drones and artillery. According to the regional administration, authorities received 51 reports of damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure facilities.
The Kharkiv region was also targeted by drone attacks. Regional authorities reported strikes on 17 settlements. A 59-year-old man was injured in the village of Riasne in the Zolochiv community. Officials also confirmed damage to civilian infrastructure, including homes, vehicles, power lines, a market, an elevator facility, and railway infrastructure in the city of Barvinkove.
The attacks took place amid ongoing discussions surrounding a temporary ceasefire.

Earlier this week, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced a unilateral ceasefire for May 8 and 9 and warned of retaliation if Ukraine attempted to disrupt Victory Day events in Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by calling for a ceasefire beginning on the night of May 6 instead.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia continued strikes after the proposed truce period began. Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov previously stated: “If the ceasefire introduced by Ukraine is mutual, we will continue it.”
US President Donald Trump said on May 8 that Russia and Ukraine would observe a three-day ceasefire on May 9, 10, and 11 and conduct a “1000-for-1000” prisoner exchange. Zelenskyy later confirmed preparations for the exchange and stated that Ukraine would respond “symmetrically” if Russia violated the ceasefire.
