The US President described the move as a potential step toward finishing the war. He noted that discussions regarding the end of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine are ongoing and that parties are moving closer to a resolution.

"Negotiations to end this big conflict, the largest since World War II, are ongoing, and we are getting closer to a solution every day," Trump added.
Prior to this, Russia had claimed it would implement a temporary ceasefire starting at midnight on May 8.
However, оn May 6, 2026, Russia launched a new wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, despite a "silence regime" that had officially begun at midnight.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces attacked several regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk, using over 100 drones and three missiles.
In Kharkiv, a drone struck a private home and injured two people, while another strike in the Sumy region hit a civilian vehicle, killing one woman. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that these actions demonstrated Moscow's rejection of genuine diplomatic efforts and peace initiatives.
