Russia launched a new wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, despite a “silence regime” that had officially begun at midnight, according to Ukraine’s Air Force on May 6.

The attacks targeted several regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk, after Ukraine announced it would mirror Russia’s proposed May 8–9 ceasefire and suggested extending it starting from May 6.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russian forces attacked Ukraine overnight with 108 drones and three missiles, accusing Moscow of once again rejecting genuine diplomatic efforts.

“This demonstrates that Russia rejects peace, and its fake calls for a ceasefire on May 9 have nothing to do with diplomacy. Putin cares only about military parades, not about human lives,” Sybiha stated.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russian forces launched two Iskander-M ballistic missiles, a Kh-31 guided missile, and more than 100 drones, including Shahed UAVs and decoy drones. Ukrainian air defenses reportedly shot down or suppressed 89 drones using electronic warfare systems.

In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said a Russian Shahed drone struck a private home, damaging at least seven buildings. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov later reported that two people were injured.

Russian forces also repeatedly attacked Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs. Governor Ivan Fedorov said an industrial infrastructure facility was hit, though no casualties were reported.

In Kryvyi Rih, drones damaged infrastructure facilities, while additional strikes hit communities in the Nikopol area using drones and artillery.

Elsewhere, Russian drone attacks in Kherson sparked fires inside a residential building, with emergency crews rescuing three women from smoke-filled apartments.

In the Sumy region, a Russian drone struck a civilian vehicle, killing one woman and injuring the driver.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the ceasefire initiative on May 4 as a response to Russia’s unilateral declaration of a temporary truce linked to Victory Day events in Moscow.

Kyiv said it was prepared to maintain silence if Russia genuinely halted attacks, while warning that Ukraine would respond symmetrically to any violations.

Earlier, Zelenskyy accused Russia of “utter cynicism” after a new wave of missile and drone strikes hit energy infrastructure and civilian areas across Ukraine.

The President criticized Moscow for calling for a ceasefire around its upcoming Victory Day celebrations while continuing daily attacks in the lead-up to the event.
