Russia Suffers Bloodiest Month of War as 54,400 Troops Killed or Severely Wounded in October

October delivered a devastating blow to Russia’s war effort, as Moscow suffered record battlefield losses while Ukrainian forces reversed its territorial gains, reclaiming more land than Russian troops managed to seize.
Russia suffered its heaviest monthly military losses since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with 54,400 Russian troops killed or severely wounded in October 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on November 1.

According to Zelenskyy, October marked a record month for Russian military losses, with October 21 setting a new single-day record of 2,250 Russian troops killed or severely wounded.
Despite continued Russian offensive operations, Ukrainian forces also reclaimed more territory than Russia managed to capture during the month.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces liberated 96.2 square kilometers (37.1 square miles) of Ukrainian territory in October, exceeding Russian territorial gains by 10.4 square kilometers (4 square miles), Zelenskyy said.

“We continue to reclaim what is ours,” the Ukrainian president stated, thanking Ukrainian troops and military units for their efforts. The record losses came as Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) reported their highest monthly results since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
According to USF commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi on November 1, Ukrainian drone units struck 64,807 Russian targets throughout October, averaging 2,091 targets per day—approximately one every 41 seconds.
The units also reported 16,796 Russian personnel casualties during the month, their highest monthly figure to date. This represented a 24.71% increase compared with September and a 52.55% increase compared with August.
On October 24 alone, the Unmanned Systems Forces reported 701 Russian personnel casualties, their highest daily total for the month.
Throughout October, Ukrainian drone operators conducted 255,605 combat missions, including approximately 151,500 strike missions and 104,000 reconnaissance flights. Nearly 70% of the reported Russian personnel casualties inflicted by these units occurred along the Dobropillia-Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole sectors of the front.

Brovdi emphasized that the figures cover only the Unmanned Systems Forces and do not include results achieved by other Ukrainian military formations.
Zelenskyy stressed that Russia could end its mounting losses by agreeing to a ceasefire and pursuing diplomatic negotiations. “Russia is losing. We are holding our positions, liberating territory, and ensuring that every day of war costs the aggressor as much as possible,” he said.
Earlier on November 1, Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck a Russian Pantsir-S2 air defense system and an S-400 Triumph command vehicle, with the targeted equipment valued at approximately $70 million. The operation was carried out by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and other Defense Forces units.
