Russia Unveils Patent for Armored Tractor With Machine-Gun Turret and Reduced Heat Signature

Russia’s Bryansk Automobile Plant (BAZ) has patented a new heavy military tractor featuring a fully armored cab, a roof-mounted machine-gun turret, and a series of heat-shielding measures designed to reduce the vehicle’s thermal signature.

The design appears in Russian patent RU 2870257 C1, published by Russia’s Federal Institute of Industrial Property. BAZ filed the application on December 25, 2025, while the patent was registered and published on September 18, 2026.

The proposed vehicle is based on a four-axle chassis and uses a fifth-wheel coupling, allowing it to tow heavy semi-trailers. Its cab features a fully armored frame-and-panel construction intended to protect the crew.

Patent drawings show a rotating mount with a hatch and turret on the cab roof, where a machine gun can be installed. The documentation does not specify what type of weapon the vehicle would carry.

Behind the armored cab is a separate engine compartment built around a welded frame made from rectangular steel tubing and enclosed by protective panels, access doors, and maintenance hatches.

The design places particular emphasis on reducing the tractor’s heat signature. According to the patent, thermal shielding covers several external components, including the cab steps, engine compartment, batteries, air filters, and the hydraulic steering system’s oil tank.

The vehicle’s mufflers and spark arresters are also fitted with thermal shielding, while additional armored-steel panels protect parts of the transmission and wheel wells.

Other equipment described in the patent includes a filtration and ventilation system, a winch, primary and auxiliary fuel tanks, and a mechanism for handling the spare wheel.

The tractor also features mounting points for camouflage nets and brackets designed to hold cut vegetation, providing additional means of concealing the vehicle in the field.

The patent describes the project as a protected tractor capable of towing heavy semi-trailers. However, its publication does not indicate that BAZ has produced a prototype or that the vehicle has entered serial production.

BAZ specializes in heavy wheeled chassis and tractors used as platforms for Russian military equipment, including the S-300, S-350, S-400, and S-500 air defense systems, as well as Tor-M2 systems and various radar and electronic warfare platforms.

Russia has also been expanding its development of unmanned ground combat systems. In April, Russia demonstrated the tracked Kuryer robotic platform equipped with an automated 82mm mortar module and loading system capable of reloading the weapon in roughly five seconds.
