Russian Ballistic Attack on Kyiv Leaves Five Ambulance Staff Injured and Residents Trapped
At least 20 people were killed and 90 others injured after a massive overnight Russian ballistic missile and strike drone assault targeted Kyiv on July 2, 2026, damaging 28 locations across the capital, including an ambulance substation and multiple residential high-rises.

Kyiv was targeted by a Russian ballistic missile and strike drone bombardment overnight on July 2, 2026, the city’s mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, and the military administration reported.

As of now, authorities confirmed that 21 people had been killed and 90 injured. Officials also reported damage at 28 locations across Kyiv, primarily affecting residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
The hardest-hit areas included the Darnytskyi district, where a direct strike damaged the first through sixth floors of a nine-story apartment building, as well as the Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts.
The strike hit an ambulance substation, a nine-story residential building, and the roof of another high-rise. Five substation workers, including medics and drivers, were injured—with one paramedic in critical condition—while multiple residents remain trapped inside the partially destroyed nine-story apartment.
Heavy rescue operations are simultaneously unfolding across the rest of the capital. In the Desnianskyi district, search-and-rescue teams are working to extract the trapped residents from the ruined high-rise, while fire brigades in the Holosiivskyi district work to contain the roof blaze, Klitschko wrote.
Overall, Ukraine's air defense forces intercepted or electronically suppressed 476 of the 496 drones launched by Russia during a large-scale overnight assault, achieving a drone interception rate of nearly 96%.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched a total of 570 aerial weapons overnight on July 2, including 74 missiles and 496 drones of various types, with Kyiv serving as the primary target.
The missile barrage consisted of four 3M22 Zircon anti-ship missiles launched from Russia's Kursk region, 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles fired from the Bryansk and Kursk regions, 34 Kh-101 cruise missiles launched from the Vologda region, eight Kalibr cruise missiles from Novorossiysk, and four Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles originating from the Voronezh region.
In parallel, Russian forces deployed 496 unmanned aerial vehicles, including Shahed attack drones, Gerbera and Italmas drones, Banderol loitering munitions, and Parodiya decoys. The drones were launched from the Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions, as well as from Russian-occupied parts of the Donetsk region and Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea.
The ballistic missile strikes followed an earlier wave from the same overnight assault, during which Russian forces launched a drone attack against Kyiv, with debris igniting a fire at a central hotel. Hours before the bombardment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing a massive coordinated strike.
