Ukraine’s air defenses downed or suppressed 476 of 496 Russian drones during a massive combined attack overnight, reaching a drone interception rate of nearly 96%—close to the target level Kyiv has been working to build into its future air defense system.

Russia launched 570 aerial attack weapons against Ukraine, including 74 missiles and 496 drones of different types, Ukraine’s Air Force reported on July 2. The main direction of the strike was Kyiv.

The attack included four 3M22 Zircon anti-ship missiles launched from Russia’s Kursk region, 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles from Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions, 34 Kh-101 cruise missiles from the Vologda region, eight Kalibr cruise missiles from Novorossiysk, and four Kh-59/69 guided aviation missiles from the Voronezh region.

Russia also launched 496 drones, including Shahed-type attack UAVs, Gerbera drones, Italmas drones, Banderol loitering munitions, and Parodiya decoys. The drones were launched from Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Russian-occupied Donetsk, and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down or suppressed 524 targets in total: 48 missiles and 476 drones.

The intercepted missiles included four Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, 32 Kh-101 cruise missiles, eight Kalibr cruise missiles, and four Kh-59/69 guided aviation missiles.

The drone result stood out. Ukraine stopped 476 of 496 Russian UAVs, a rate of almost 96%, even as Moscow continues to increase the scale and variety of its drone attacks.

The result comes as Ukraine’s Defense Ministry works to build an air defense system capable of intercepting 95% of Russian airborne threats. A major part of that effort is the expansion of short-range air defense, including interceptor drones and low-cost anti-Shahed missiles.

Ukraine has already reported early progress in that area. The success rate of interceptor drones against Shaheds has doubled over the past four months, while deliveries of interceptor drones have increased 2.6 times. That improvement has come even as the number of Shaheds launched by Russia each month has grown by 35%.

“According to preliminary information, as of 9:00 am, hits by 25 ballistic missiles and 12 attack UAVs were recorded at 33 locations, as well as falling debris from downed targets at 18 locations. Information on several missiles is being clarified,” Ukraine’s Air Force said.

At least 13 people were killed and 90 others injured after a massive overnight Russian ballistic missile and strike drone assault targeted Kyiv on July 2, 2026, damaging 28 locations across the Ukrainian capital city.

During June, Russia launched 5,929 aerial attack weapons against Ukraine, while Ukrainian air defenses destroyed or electronically suppressed 5,277 of them, resulting in an overall neutralization rate of nearly 90%.
