Russian Mi-8 Escapes Ukrainian Drones Midair, Lands Straight Into a Deadly Trap

According to the Third Army Corps, the operation was carried out by the SKYFOM strike-wing platoon of the Third Assault Brigade’s unmanned systems battalion during a mission targeting Russian military logistics.

Ukrainian drone operators detected the helicopter in flight and launched a Hornet drone to intercept it. The Russian crew changed direction, but the helicopter’s cruising speed exceeded that of the pursuing drone.
Once the helicopter landed, Ukrainian operators struck it near its fuel tanks. A second Hornet drone subsequently hit the aircraft, which burned out completely, according to the Ukrainian military.
The Mi-8 is a twin-engine military helicopter widely used by Russian forces to transport personnel and equipment, evacuate wounded soldiers, and provide battlefield support.
Ukrainian OSINT analysts from CyberBoroshno geolocated the strike near Tarasivka in the occupied Luhansk region, approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) from the front line.

The Hornet is a fixed-wing, one-way attack drone designed to strike targets beyond the immediate battlefield, including military vehicles and logistical infrastructure.
The helicopter strike comes amid reports of further Russian military aviation losses. On October 29, a Russian Su-57 fighter jet caught fire at the Akhtubinsk airfield in the Astrakhan region following an engine startup malfunction.
The incident could mark the fourth reported case of an Su-57 being destroyed or damaged in 2026, following Ukrainian drone strikes on two aircraft in April and a reported Russian friendly-fire incident in July.
